North Bay Games & Hobbies Tournament Rules
Welcome to our first comprehensive board game tournament! We are adapting the Great Canadian Board Game Blitz structure for this event. Here is everything you need to know:
Key Rules & Gameplay
- Official Rules: All games are played straight out of the box with no house rules. The Tournament Organizer has the final say on all disputes.
- Learning the Games: You don't need to know every game beforehand. There will be 5-10 mins to review rules before the round starts.
- Pacing & Time Limits: Please take your turns promptly. When only one table is left running past the round time, that group will have 10 minutes to wrap up.
- Starting Player: Follow the game's manual. If none is stated, roll two 6-sided dice; the highest roll goes first.
- Attendance: If you can't play a round, you will not earn points for skipped or forfeited games.
Game Selection
- Round 1 (Short Games): Player names are drawn completely at random. When your name is called, you can either select a title from our list of 8 available short board games to start a new table, or choose to join a table that has already been started. Once enough tables have been established to accommodate all tournament participants, any remaining players drawn must join one of the existing open tables.
- Round 2 (Short Games): To keep things fair, the second round of short games will follow the exact same format, but the player selection order will run in the reverse order of the names drawn in Round 1.
- Medium & Long Game Rounds: For subsequent rounds, game selection order is determined by tournament standings. Players with the highest cumulative points will earn the right to choose the games and tables first.
Point System
Points are awarded at the end of each game based on your finishing rank. In-game tie-breakers apply. If a tie persists, points for those ranks are split evenly.
| Game Type | 1st Place | 2nd Place | 3rd Place | 4th Place+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short Games (15 Min) | 5 pts | 4 pts | 2 pts | 1 pt |
| Medium Games (30 Min) | 7.5 pts | 6 pts | 3 pts | 1.5 pts |
| Long Games (1 Hr) | 10 pts | 8 pts | 4 pts | 2 pts |
Winning the Tournament
- Grand Champion: The player with the highest cumulative points across all rounds wins.
- Tie-Breaker (1st Place): A tie for first will be settled by a short, strategic playoff game between the tied players.
- Tie-Breaker (2nd or 3rd Place): Decided by whoever has the most total 1st place game finishes. if still tied, a strategic playoff game between tied players.
