During WWII, the soldiers of the Wehrmacht at the front consumed largely the same rations irrespective of their rank, and based around bread using wheat and rye, and a nutritious stew in including meat (usually sausage) and potatoes. This was served by a field kitchen, which usually consisted of a front limber with space for the driver and storage for ingredients and equipment, plus a trailer with soup copper or kettle, but could also operate with either the limber or the trailer.
